When I read this story I was more focused on the place Emma is in her life. The author gave details about her transitioning from high school to college. She wants so badly to escape her Catholic high school for a mostly Jewish college. The author makes it clear that she wants to leave but is afraid because she has become accustomed to the way her life is now. We know that Emma is not used to the rural environment she is in. When they are walking to their cabin, it is made very clear that they are not used to the trees and rabbits crossing their paths. We know this story takes place in the north because the girls have not been farther south than Indiana. This is a story most people can relate to at one time or another.
